Rom. 8:26-28 Meanwhile, the moment we get tired in the waiting, God’s Spirit is right alongside helping us along. If we don’t know how or what to pray, it doesn’t matter. He does our praying in and for us, making prayer out of our wordless sighs, our aching groans.
While it’s no longer Star Wars Day (May the 4th be With You), the idea of the force and the Holy Spirit have a lot of similarities. While the Holy Spirit may not help you with Jedi mind tricks or moving rocks (though side note: moving mountains is within the realm of possibilities with the Holy Spirit) the Holy Spirit is promised to us as a guide. Think of it, the God of the universe wants to be with you through all of your ups and downs. That’s absolutely incredible.
I remember the first time God really became real for me. I had grown up in the church and knew about God and even wanted to make him Lord of my life; however, it was on a missions trip in my early high school years that I had an encounter like no other. It’s hard to define how the Holy Spirit works in each of us as it’s fairly subjective. However, here is what I have learned: The Holy Spirit’s role in our lives will always lead us into a deeper relationship with him. My youth pastor used to tell me, “Scott, there are only three voices that can be in your head: Yours, God’s, or the devil’s.” And while that simplifies things quite a bit, it leads me to this verse:
Rom. 8:26-28 Meanwhile, the moment we get tired in the waiting, God’s Spirit is right alongside helping us along. If we don’t know how or what to pray, it doesn’t matter. He does our praying in and for us, making prayer out of our wordless sighs, our aching groans. He knows us far better than we know ourselves, knows our pregnant condition, and keeps us present before God. That’s why we can be so sure that every detail in our lives of love for God is worked into something good.
No matter where you are, or what you are doing, the Holy Spirit is there. The key to this verse though is the effort it takes on our part to begin praying. Notice, our posture can’t just be to ignore God. Rather, as we begin to pray and attempt to build a relationship with God in his glorious ways fills in the gap and meets us where we are at.
So whether you are feeling lonely, anxious, or excited for life right now, here is the practice: invite the Holy Spirit into your day. Invite him to join you. Invite him to help you and be aware of how he’s working to lead you.
