Matthew 11:28
“Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.
Life can seem just a little crazy sometimes and when we have a thousand things to do and we’re running a thousand miles per minute serving others in love can feel like the last thing we can muster up the strength to do. But I’m here to tell you, something wonderful happens when we serve unto the Lord, even in our tiredness and weariness.
Let me start by saying, Jesus rested. Jesus went off to private places and spent time in prayer with the Father, quieted his heart, and truly found rejuvenating rest before he continued to serve. But those long days he spent preaching and teaching, the long travels and hot sun-baked days, were most likely riddled with tiredness. Yet he pressed on because the Lord was moving and stirring and glorious things were happening. Imagine if every day Jesus chose to sleep in till 12 PM, whined about getting up to do his work unto the Lord, or stayed home all cozy and comfy. Do you think thousands of people would have come to know the Lord? No. And the way he chose to serve was remarkable.
Jesus is calling you to do the same, to serve in the same way. He’s saying, come rest with me and then watch as I send you out to serve in mighty mighty ways. He’s calling you to more than a daily afternoon nap or another season of binge-watching a Nexflix show. He’s calling you to find energy and excitement in the midst of serving.
Think of your serving in this way: You have a mission, one ordained by the Lord, to get out and love others, help others, serve others. And as you take on that mission you become more and more in tune with the kingdom of God. Your work for the kingdom isn’t just a mission anymore, it’s your life and it’s fulfilling and glorious.
Maybe today’s your day to view serving in a new light. Maybe it’s time you come to Jesus for real rest, step out of your weariness, and begin to serve the Lord your God. Wonderful things happen when we live alife fully devoted to our mission to serve. Let’s revel in that together.
