I woke up and hurried out to my car, coffee sloshing out of my mug and my hair a frizzy mess. I was late and my meeting was starting in only a few minutes. 2021 was starting out frantic and quick and the hustle and bustle was quite foreign to me given the slowness of 2020. I cranked the key of my car in the ignition and… nothing.

My 2021 was starting with a dead car battery. But how? I hadn’t driven my car all Christmas break. It’s just been sitting, kind of like I had been doing all Christmas and new years.

I missed my meeting and I had to buy a quite expensive new car battery from a kind AAA worker. But, most importantly, I learned my first lesson of 2021: Sometimes car batteries die, things don’t go our way, and Jesus knew all along. He knew and He had a purpose for it. Because my car battery died I had 20 min to wait for AAA. I spent that 20 min journaling and praying and talking with God about how being upset about my silly situation was only a waste of my time. I realized in the craziness of that morning, I would’ve missed time with Jesus, missed time breathing and being if my car battery hadn’t have died.

Let’s enter 2021 with this mentality that car batteries might die, things will go wrong and instead of letting it always get the best of us, let’s spend our days turning and asking Jesus what He just might have for us in the disappointment, frustration, and pain.
