Ephesians 3:20
Now to him who is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine, according to his power that is at work within us”


But can he really do Immeasurably more? I know what you’re thinking. My mind gears crank the same way when I read this verse. I step back and look at it through my very own pair of lenses. They’re my “I know what’s best” glasses if you will and they more often than not make me think much too critically about life. 

When I pray sometimes I catch myself asking God over and over again for massive things. I ask for world peace, for people I feel are so far from Jesus to come near and begin to know him, and for all my worries and doubts to seemingly fade away. I pray in a way that seems impossible. Some days I’ll even end prayers and feel defeated, not encouraged or hopeful. 

When I hear that God is able to do immeasurably more than I can ask or imagine I stop and think. I don’t get giddy and hurry off into a time of prayer. I slow myself and think about the big prayers I pray and question why God isn’t answering those.

Now, God is all-knowing, filled with endless wisdom, bigger than anything I can even imagine, and my prayers are made with those lenses on, those glasses that make me think I know what’s best. If his word says he can do immeasurably more…  who am I to question him? God has such a bigger plan and purpose in mind. He uses the brokenness in our world, he uses our weaknesses, and so much more to help his plan and purpose fall into place.

So while I’m asking for an easy, happy, simple day He’s up there planning immeasurably more over my life, even if it causes me to feel uncomfortable, growing pains, and difficulties. 

I think we take verses and morph them into what we want. We want God to do immeasurably more, but only when it aligns with our immediate wants and needs. We get irritated and confused when what we thought was perfect and good isn’t answered. We question his power, his intentions, etc. Do we not?

Take some time today to rethink your biggest prayers. What seems too wild to be answered? Now change the way you pray it. Try asking for the Lord’s will to be done in that situation. Try asking the Lord to be immeasurably more however he sees fit, however glorifies him most, however aligns with his plan and purpose.
