John 14:27, “Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid.”

Every time I’m feeling low or feeling anxious, I want something to take my mind off of it. I’m looking for a quick fix. I think to myself that I’ll just scroll through one or two videos but by the end, I just wasted 3 hours trying to distract myself.

In those times it crosses my mind that I should read my Bible. I know that if I am this overwhelmed, I know mentally that what I am looking for is Peace that only Jesus can give. But in those times the cover of my Bible feels like it is 300 pounds. The idea of moving to grab it from my shelf seems like too much so I just don’t. But when I do, I am always satisfied.

When you are down or hurting or bored, don’t numb the pain. Turning to things that distract you will only prolong your suffering. Jesus says in John that He does not give as the world gives. Correct, His rest is more than a façade, it is authentic and exactly what our souls need. Every time.

Especially in those low times, listen to the Holy Spirit, the small thought in your mind that maybe you should just open your Bible and read. That maybe you should switch your music to something more encouraging, something Christian. That maybe you shouldn’t get wrapped up in the scrolling of temporary distraction and instead read from the Book that tells you about how much you are loved and valued because of Christ. Push through that mental barrier and allow the Holy Spirit to be your comfort. It’s the only peace that lasts.
