Ecclesiastes 4:12
“Though one may be overpowered, two can defend themselves. A cord of three strands is not quickly broken.”
“Though one may be overpowered, two can defend themselves. A cord of three strands is not quickly broken.”
How do we hold onto hope in uncertainty? What’s interesting to me is while our world is in a state of anxiety, men and women of faith have been wrestling with the big philosophical questions since the beginning. Sometimes people wrestle through massive times of chaos like what people did in WWII. And sometimes, people wrestled in personal moments such as trying to process through death or the divorce of parents.
No matter what the situation, life is filled with obstacles that will seek to destroy our hope. A key to holding hope lies in each other. I am reminded of a time when I was in college feeling like the world was caving in. In fact, I was so stressed I couldn’t even sleep at night and was just overwhelmed with life. (Have you ever been there before?) I remember one night, in particular, I received a text message from a mentor of mine from years back. I hadn’t talked to him in probably two years, but he was someone who had a radical impact on my life. I called him, hesitantly, because I felt the guilt of being a terrible “friend.” Upon apologizing for losing touch with him but so thankful for him to reach out, I remember him saying, “Scott, we get it, we know you’re at college and busy. I just want you to know I’m still praying for you and love you the same.”
Just having that quick conversation and knowing someone else was in the trenches with me (no matter how far apart we were physically) made a world of difference in my heart. My hope went from non-existent to a place where I was reminded – I am not alone. People are with me. I can do this. And I’d like to remind you of that: You are not alone. God has not forgotten you. Hope is here, and his name is Jesus.
I am reminded of Ecclesiastes 4:12: “Though one may be overpowered, two can defend themselves. A cord of three strands is not quickly broken.”
Find someone in this season who inspires your hope, encourages you, and leads you closer to Jesus. In times of isolation, those are the relationships in which we need to bond. And if you don’t have those people, pray them into your life. I truly believe God will provide for all of your needs.
