2 Corinthians 1:20
“For no matter how many promises God has made, they are ‘Yes’ in Christ. … That is why it is through him that we utter our Amen to God for his glory.”
God makes a lot of promises in the Bible. In fact, one dude looked all those promises up and said he found 7,487 promises God makes to humanity throughout the bible.
Now, I didn’t spend the time to count to see if he was accurate. But, I will at least generally agree that there are a lot of promises God gives to us. Here’s that hard part: How do we know we can trust those promises? Sometimes life can feel like a bunch of empty promises and in our culture today empty promises are more normal than not.
I remember even making empty promises to my friends. “Hey dude, if you jump into this trash can, I’ll give you $10.” (I was never going to give him $10).
When it comes to promises many of us (including me) are often jaded by the realities of life and the realities of living with a bunch of liars! JUST KIDDING. But seriously, we all fall short of even our own best intentions. So when it comes to a God we can’t touch, see, or even physically encounter how can we know that God’s promises are trustworthy?
Well, here’s what I have for you: listen to some stories. Stories (for me) have been the best way to see how God has stayed true to his promises. When we hear people’s stories it takes the Bible from being a book with words to the actual living word of God in people’s lives. Recently I came across a story of my youth pastor’s youth pastor. In his story, God’s promises of hope and peace are on display. Take a look and remember this week: you can trust God’s promises.
