1 John 3:24
“Those who obey God’s commandments remain in fellowship with him, and he with them. And we know he lives in us because the Spirit he gave us lives in us.”

Remember when you were a child and you were put in timeouts when you got in trouble? One of the reasons I hated timeouts or getting grounded was because I didn’t like being alone. Sin is like a timeout in our relationship with God. It separates us from him.
Think of Adam and Eve. They were with God in the garden, but once they sinned the consequence for that was separation from God. They thought that what they wanted was better than what God had provided for them. Because of their actions, they were sent out to provide for themselves.
Sin feels good and gives us a fake sense of happiness. What if I told you that is actually less rewarding? Sin reminds me of a bug bite. Bug bites itch and make you believe that, if you scratch it, you’ll get some relief. When you give into scratching it though, you find that the bite actually gets itchier and more uncomfortable.
1 John 3:24 states “Those who obey God’s commandments remain in fellowship with him, and he with them. And we know he lives in us because the Spirit he gave us lives in us.”
When we sin, we will feel false happiness for a brief moment, and then after we will feel lost and alone. Following God is the only way to have a relationship with him. Not only do we get that, but he also gives us his Spirit to protect us from choosing sin in the future! God wants so badly to be in fellowship with us that he gave us a superpower to discern right from wrong. As great as our own desires appear, experiencing the love of God is so much more fulfilling.
