John 10:27, “My sheep listen to my voice; I know them, and they follow me”

My devotional time is something that I hold dearly. I have weeks where I have time every morning in prayer and there are weeks where I am not so attentive. But…when I make the time to meet with Jesus in the morning and talk, He talks.

I like to start my devotional time out with a devotional book and let that speak to me. Some days its profound, other days not so much. Either way, it is a special way that I like to start my time. After, I read through a chapter of the Bible and then I journal through it. Again, sometimes the reading of Scripture reveals new insights for me, sometimes, again, not so much.

I struggled for a long time with my devotional time, wrestling through what it looks like to hear from God. It wasn’t until I stopped looking for a booming voice and started to look for and listen to the quiet whispers and scriptural promptings that I realized that God was vying for my attention the whole time.

The thing that changed for me is when I started to get more familiar with my Bible. When I learned more about the nature of God, I was able to recognize His voice more in my life. When I would have thoughts or inclinations that inspire me or push me to act, I can recognize that they are from God because I’m familiar with Him through His Word.

It’s hard to recognize the Father’s Voice if you don’t know the Father.

And the best way to learn more about Him is by reading His Words in the Bible.

This week take a minute to sit quietly and pray. Read through some scriptures, grab a devotional book, or listen to a Christian song. Instead of deciding that you won’t hear anything, allow the words to speak to you and ask God what He’s saying. For me, that’s where I found peace.
