John 16:33
“I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.”

I hate driving by a car crash. I hate seeing the red brake lights and the slowing cars and somewhere down the road a plethora of flashing police and ambulance lights. It all just fills me with this sick sense of worry.

They call it rubbernecking when you take interest in all the craziness happening around you and fail to watch the road closely and I hate to say it, but I’m guilty of rubbernecking. No matter the pit in my stomach that comes with a car accident, I can’t help but crane my neck to peek over and see what the damage is.

It’s not much different in my everyday life. I look to the left and right on my life journey and let whatever is on the side of my road fill me with worry or stress or fear. I can’t help but let all the external factors of life get the best of me. I rubberneck down the road of my life and constantly take my eyes off what truly matters… Jesus.

There’s this old song I come back to when I need to refocus, get my eyes back on the road, back on Jesus. I’ve sat in bed journaling and had this song playing in the back and it gets me every time. I begin to tear up and I become overwhelmed by the simplicity of turning to Jesus in every situation. It’s actually so comforting to know the security that comes with placing all my trust in Jesus.

Turing my eyes to Jesus allows the craziness on the side of the road to fade. It helps me focus on what lies ahead, what good is before me, and what comfort and peace he has for me. Jesus never promised the journey would be easy. He never said the side of the road would be void of accidents, tragedy, obstacles, etc. He did say though that he overcame the world. He’s our savior, our conquer, and the one we find our victory in.

I can find this unreal sense of peace in that truth. His nearness to me becomes almost tangible when I truly slow down, take my eyes off the distractions and focus on Jesus.

I encourage you to try and do that today. Take a second and listen to this song. Close your eyes and take a moment to actually refocus and watch as Jesus steps in to comfort you today.
